Former Astronauts

Commander John B. Herrington (USN, Ret.) is the first Native American to fly and walk in space and is an enrolled member of the Chickasaw Nation of Oklahoma.  He is currently the Special Advisor, National Institute for Space, Science and Security Centers, University of Colorado at Colorado Springs.

Robert Curbeam is a graduate of the United States Naval Academy and has more time in space than any other African American.  He also has more hours of extravehicular activity (45) and more spacewalks 7(seven) than any other African American.  On his third spaceflight, he set a record for the most spacewalks (four) in a single shuttle mission.  After a 23 year career as an officer in the US Navy, over half of them with NASA, Curbeam is now an executive with the ARES Corporation.

Higginbotham, the third African-American female to fly in space, logged 12 days, 20 hours and 45 minutes.  Her primary task was to operate the Space Shuttle Remote Manipulator System (SSRMS).
